The book is about a dystopian future in the year 1984. It takes place in modern day London, called Oceania. Our main character, Winston, faces many difficulties as he struggles to live during this period of ruthless control over the lives of citizens of Oceania. After Winston finds himself in a dangerous situation, the novel summarizes the principles of Oceania and by what mechanism it functions. The reader can learn a great deal on authoritarianism and how controlling governments might function.
I would definitely recommend this book. Not only does the book have an enthralling story, it educates the reader about the dangers of increasing government control and by what devices it attains that control. Readers can draw parallels between the novels government and similar governments in history or even in the present day. The book is extremely thorough when describing the various aspects of life, including the language, world conflicts, and parts of government. When I was finished reading, it felt very satisfying and I could not believe why I did not read it earlier.
