“A Mango Shaped Space” is a novel by Wendy Mass about a girl named Mia who has synesthesia, a condition where she perceives the world through a blending of senses. The story follows Mia as she struggles to understand and accept her unique perception of the world. Throughout the novel, she discovers more about herself and learns to embrace her differences. The novel also explores the relationship between Mia and her family, including her brother who has a disability, and her friends who struggle to understand her. As Mia navigates through life with synesthesia, she faces challenges and learns important lessons about self-acceptance, understanding, and empathy. The novel ends with Mia finding peace and acceptance with herself and her unique perspective of the world.
I would recommend this book, and consider it one of my favorites. The book is unique and well-written, bringing synesthesia to life through the main character. The supporting characters are well-developed and add depth to the story. The only flaw is that the pace can be slow and repetitive at times. The writing style is simple and easy to follow. Despite some flaws, the book is truly unique and touching.
