Belly Up by Eva Darrows is about the life of the high school senior taking a detour from her original goals in life because of her unplanned pregnancy. Serendipity Rodriguez always acted like the picture perfect straight A student with the aspirations to go to an ivy college. But one party, some loneliness and a guy altered those plans. Starting a new school and charting through the waters of pregnancy Serendipity feels lost. Thankfully through it all she has her mom, grandmother, best friend and more people who become family to her. Belly up expresses the challenges high school students face with growing up while reminding us of all the amazing things which come with it.
I would recommend this book to a high school student because its a fun and easy read. The book itself isn’t too long and there isn’t a need for extreme interoperation of language (like Shakespeare). One of my favorite things about this novel is the way it discussed several current themes in a warm and welcoming manner to inform the reader, while also keeping the book engaging.
