How does a scrawny farmer boy defeat a great warrior? David and Goliath explores the practical advantages that allow for the perceived underdog to succeed. Dyslexia, war, civil injustice, the murder of your daughter – these are all perceived as grave tragedies – but what if these situations were the catalysts for great successes? Most of us constantly judge events as good or bad, and we fail to recognize the advantages present in every situation. In the face of challenges you have 2 options: either wallow in self pity or adapt and overcome their circumstances. How we respond to our challenges dictates whether we capitalize on our experience or we let our trauma destroy our lives. Gladwell explores how grave challenges impel people to take unique approaches, stray from the conventional route, and achieve greatness. Additionally this novel explores how too much of a perceived “good thing” may be detrimental. For example small class sizes may seem like a desirable, intimate teaching structure but the reality is that students benefit more from an average class size. Malcolm cautions readers from extremes and instead advocates for a more moderate approach to many issues. Malcolm Gladwell’s novel explores practical examples of these themes, exposing how even the most dire situations may yield positive results.
I enjoyed this book very much, Gladwell offers a unique take on many practical examples of challenges. His perspective is inspiring and evokes readers to translate these lessons into their own lives – stop judging events as good or bad and instead focus on what new approach you can take to achieve success. The examples given by Malcolm illustrate his many points and constantly demonstrates how people have found the advantages in disadvantageous situations.
