Firekeeper’s Daughter is a young adult thriller book where the main character, Daunis, struggles with being a woman of two very different family backgrounds. After experiencing a tragedy, she becomes actively involved in saving her Native American community. She takes on an important role to rid her community of its corruption. Through mystery and plot twists, Daunis’s journey is anything but easy. She faces heartbreak and betrayal, but is also met with the loving support of her family and community. Along the way on her journey for justice, she learns about the importance of love, loss and her heritage.
I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who likes a thrilling journey. The book is very well written and has a unique and creative story line that is engaging to anyone who likes a mystery. Also, the characters are very well developed and as a reader, one can see them grow over the length of the book. The novel provides amazing imagery for the reader to imagine the setting and characters of the book. Additionally, the book gives accurate and interesting insight on the Native American culture and traditions, which can teach many people about the practices of cultures such as the Ojibwe tribe in Firekeeper’s Daughter. Lastly, I think that the morals and teachings of this book are extremely important for the young adult population to learn about. There are central themes of family, identities and the strength and power of communities, and those are ideas that, I think, everyone should be familiar with.
