Camila Hassan is a young woman in Argentina with dreams of playing soccer. But she’s constrained to her home by her mothers dreams of her being a doctor and her father’s sexist beliefs. Their expectations for her brother will always overshadow her dreams, that is, until she decides to continue playing soccer despite their doubts and disapproval. From Camila’s ex-boyfriend’s return and the dangers young girls in Argentina face, Camila gains the motivation to play as “Furia”. She plays for herself, her boyfriend, and for women everywhere.
I highly recommend this book. I was enthralled by the story from the first chapter. Camila’s boyfriend, Diego, was supportive and passionate, which made for a great romance. While the romance isn’t the main focus of the book as it is marketed to be, it’s still a great addition to this coming-of-age story. The book is more about Camila’s experience playing soccer and how she defies her family and defies sexism in society. The feminist messages were inspiring, as was Camila’s support she received from other women. This is a quick, easy read, but Camila’s strength and determination against a multitude of obstacles is nonetheless impactful.
