This book is about a teenage boy named Arnold Spirit (also known as Junior) who lives on the Spokane Indian reservation. Throughout the book, this boy transfers to an all-white school where he is an outsider. Unlike the kids who go to this all-white school, Junior isn’t nearly as wealthy as the other kids. Abandoning his friends and family on the reservation, Junior tries to fit in with the other kids, but runs into difficult situations on the way.
I would totally recommend this book to anyone from grades 8-12. It gives a good perspective of what life is like from a new point of view. It teaches about the difficulties of a new environment and the adjustments one has to make. One of my favorite things about the book is the way it’s told from Junior’s perspective. It lets us know what he’s thinking at all times and what motivates him to do what he does.
