The book focuses on a 16-year-old confident and witty girl named Hazel who suffers from deadly lung cancer. At the cancer support group her mom forces her to attend, Hazel meets an intelligent and inspiring boy named Gus who is a survivor of bone cancer. The two form an instant connection over a book called The Imperial Affliction, by a man named Peter Van Houten. Throughout the book, Hazel and Gus inspire each other to live life to the fullest and to take advantage of every moment they are granted. The ending is definitely a game changer and is worth uncovering.
I would definitely recommend this because it shows that even kids battling cancer can live happy lives. The author does an amazing job of making the commonly unrelatable experience of cancer relatable through the personalities of the characters. This book truly preaches that time is not unlimited and we cannot live our lives in fear. This is the perfect book if you are looking for an unconventional romance novel. I can confidently say that this book has altered my outlook on life, and I am grateful for all of the insight it gave me.
