The House on Mango Street was a book of vignettes. It follows the life of Esperanza and shows her innocence being lost and becoming more mature. It follows the troubles of an immigrant family who is struggling to make ends meat. It also shows how she is promised things she never gets such as a huge house. Instead, she gets “The House on Mango Street.” She is trying to accept her life but is having a hard time. The book also shows a lot of character evolution.
I would recommend this book to some. At times, this book was difficult to understand what was going on. Additionally, there are mature topics mentioned therefore I would not recommend it to middle schoolers. I think that the book was really good and had a good message by the end though. I didn’t like how the book was vignettes as I feel a continuous straight story would have been better. Overall, I really enjoyed this book and would recommend it to a more mature audience.
