The Passing Playbook is about Spencer, a trans boy, who has just moved to a new school with his mom, dad and little brother. His favorite activity ever since he was a little kid was playing soccer, but since his transition, his parents are cautious to let him play again. However, at first against his parents wishes, he joins the team, quickly making friends with the other boys, in particular Justice Cortes. Soon, a friendship, and maybe something more, grows between them. Spencer faces discrimination and hardships along his way, including the fear of coming out again, but eventually sees that not everyone is as small-minded as he once thought. The Passing Playbook shows a slow growing romance story from the perspective of misrepresented viewpoints, showing how devastating the pain but also love can be.
I would definitely recommend the book as it shows a romance story from often underrepresented perspectives and situations. The clear conflict and passion that each character shows also addresses religious morals and human rights violations, highlighting the devastating impact they can have. Additionally, all of the characters are very likeable and most people are guaranteed to relate to at least one in the story. The Passing Playbook is a feel good, short read for young adults.
